⚠ Important — read before you buy
Since July 2025, Turkey's telecommunications authority (BTK) has blocked access to Airalo, Saily, Holafly and 30+ other international eSIM providers from Turkish networks. Their apps and websites do not load once you are in Turkey. This means: buy, install and activate your eSIM before your flight. If your data runs out in Turkey, you cannot top up through these apps without a VPN. Buy a larger plan than you think you will need.
Choose in 30 seconds
All three options require installation before arrival.
Short trip or small data use (1–3 days)
→
Airalo
About one week, standard use
→
Saily
Heavy data, long stay or remote work
→
Holafly
⚠ The mistake to avoid
After installing your eSIM, check that mobile data is set to use the eSIM line, not your home SIM. Keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS if needed, but turn off data roaming on your home SIM — your carrier may charge high fees for accidental data use.
What do you need?
Pick the profile that matches your trip.

Check Airalo
Simplest setup
Clean app, built-in security tools, unlimited hotspot sharing.
Check Saily

Check Holafly
Airalo, Saily and Holafly for Turkey
All three are data-only. No calls or SMS included. All require installation before arrival.
AIR
Airalo
Fixed data plans from around $4 (1 GB) to $26+ (20 GB). Connects via Türk Telekom. Top-up available before departure — not inside Turkey.

HOLA
Holafly
Unlimited data plans only. Connects via Turkcell and Türk Telekom. Hotspot limited to 1 GB/day. Refund policy up to 6 months if unused.
Unlimited data
Good for: heavy data users, long stays, remote workers who need continuous connectivity.
Limit: hotspot restricted to 1 GB/day — not ideal for sharing data across devices. Fair use policy applies.

Unlimited plans — what the fine print says
Most "unlimited" travel eSIM plans for Turkey include a daily fair use limit. Airalo and Holafly throttle speed after approximately 3 GB/day. Saily allows 5 GB/day at full speed. If you need consistent high-speed data throughout the day, a large fixed plan (10 GB or 20 GB) is often more reliable than an unlimited plan.
Check your starting point
Your home carrier may already include Turkey. Check before buying an eSIM.
Europe — Turkey is outside most EU roaming zones. Check your carrier's travel pass before assuming roaming applies.
USA / Canada — International day passes typically cost $5–15/day. Compare with a fixed eSIM plan for the same duration.
UK — Check if your carrier's travel bolt-on includes Turkey. Many UK operators charge separately for non-EU destinations.
Australia / New Zealand — Carrier roaming in Turkey is available but often expensive. A travel eSIM is usually cheaper for stays over 3 days.
Asia, Middle East, Africa — Check whether your mobile operator offers a travel data pass for Turkey before choosing an eSIM.
Network coverage in Turkey
Three major operators. Coverage is strong in cities and tourist destinations.
Turkcell
→
~99% population, strong in Istanbul and rural areas
Türk Telekom
→
Wide coverage, strong in coastal and tourist areas
Vodafone Turkey
→
Good in cities. Less consistent in remote regions
5G availability
→
Istanbul central districts, Ankara. Falls back to 4G elsewhere.
Before you leave
These steps take five minutes and prevent most problems.
Check your phone supports eSIM (dial *#06# — if you see an EID, eSIM is supported).
Buy and install the eSIM before your flight — not at the airport.
Save the QR code or setup instructions offline in case you need to reinstall.
Set the eSIM as your mobile data line in phone settings.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid accidental charges.
Install a VPN before departure — Turkey occasionally restricts access to some websites and social media.
Download offline maps for Istanbul, Cappadocia or wherever you are going.
Note: if your stay exceeds 90 days of active use in a 120-day period, Turkish law requires IMEI registration and a one-time tax payment.
Troubleshooting
eSIM installed but no data connection
→
Check that mobile data is set to the eSIM line, not home SIM
No network available
→
Toggle airplane mode, wait 30 seconds, turn back on
Wrong APN / cannot connect to network
→
Check the APN settings in your provider's setup email
Provider app not loading in Turkey
→
Expected — use VPN to access provider app if needed
Need emergency data (existing plan exhausted)
→
Use VPN to access your provider, or use hotel / airport Wi-Fi
Not sure you need an eSIM?
Check your home carrier first. If your roaming option is clear, sufficient and cheaper than a travel eSIM, use it. Some US and UK carriers include Turkey in affordable travel passes.

Common questions
Do Airalo, Saily and Holafly work in Turkey?
Yes — but only if you install and activate the eSIM before arriving. Since July 2025, Turkey's BTK blocks access to these providers' apps and websites from Turkish networks. A pre-installed eSIM continues to work normally for the duration of your plan.
What happens if my data runs out while in Turkey?
You will not be able to top up through Airalo, Saily or Holafly from within Turkey — their apps are inaccessible without a VPN. Buy a larger plan than you expect to need before departure, or use a VPN to access the app if you need to add more data.
Can I make calls with a travel eSIM in Turkey?
No. Travel eSIMs from Airalo, Saily and Holafly are data-only. Keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar VoIP apps for calls over data.
Do I need a VPN in Turkey?
Turkey occasionally restricts access to certain websites and social media platforms during political events. Installing a VPN before arrival is useful as a backup. Your eSIM provides the data connection — a VPN app runs normally over it. See our
VPN for travel guide.
Which network do travel eSIMs use in Turkey?
Airalo connects via Türk Telekom. Holafly uses both Turkcell and Türk Telekom. Saily does not clearly disclose its network partner for Turkey — check the plan details in the app before purchasing.
