Important — EU roaming applies only to EU SIMs in EU countries
"Roam like at home" rules apply to SIM cards issued by EU carriers used within EU member states. They do not automatically apply to: travellers from outside the EU, UK SIMs post-Brexit, or visits to non-EU European countries (UK, Switzerland, Norway, Turkey). If you are unsure whether your SIM qualifies, check with your carrier before assuming roaming is free.
Field tip — verify country coverage before buying a regional plan
Regional Europe plans differ between providers. Airalo covers approximately 42 countries, Saily covers 35, Holafly covers 33. If your itinerary includes non-EU countries, check the specific country list for your chosen plan before purchasing. A country missing from the regional plan requires a separate local plan.

When EU roaming is enough
Your SIM is issued by an EU carrier.
All countries on your itinerary are EU member states.
Your plan includes a clear monthly data allowance for roaming (not just "fair use").
You have confirmed with your carrier that EU roaming is included — not just assumed.
If any of these are not true — or if you are adding non-EU countries like UK, Switzerland or Norway — a regional eSIM is simpler than managing multiple carrier add-ons.
Before you leave
Verify every country in your itinerary is covered by your chosen regional plan.
Install before departure — regional plans activate on first connection in any covered country.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM if using a travel eSIM for data.
Keep home SIM active for SMS and calls — especially important for 2FA codes while banking abroad.
If you have an EU SIM — check before buying
If you are travelling within the EU with an EU carrier SIM, roaming is likely included in your plan. A travel eSIM is not necessary in that case. This guide is primarily for travellers from outside Europe, or those visiting non-EU destinations.
